The goal of the competition is to introduce students to the engineering profession.Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from Philadelphia and surrounding counties worked with a teacher and an engineer mentor from September to January. The students design and layout a future city using SimCity4 computer software. They build a table-top model using recycled materials to illustrate one section of their city. They also write a researched technical report. Submissions are judged in January, and first place winners move on to the national competition in Washington, DC. This local contest is similar to 40 others conducted throughout the country. It is part of National Engineers Week and provides a fun educational opportunity for middle school students. |
