Employee Spotlight: Sam Peña, PE, Mechanical Engineer
1. How did you come to do what you do?
I was unsure of my major when I started college, so I took a variety of classes to explore my options. During my first semester, I took an algebra class and discovered that I loved math! I continued taking math and physics classes, and eventually decided to major in mechanical engineering. In 2013, I got a mechanical engineering internship designing water feature systems. After graduating in 2015, I was hired as a mechanical engineer for my first full-time MEP professional position. In 2018, I made the transition to working at Arora Engineers, where I have been ever since. I am enjoying my career and look forward to the future!
2. What are your favorite types of projects to work on?
I love working on large airport projects! It’s incredible to get to work on such massive systems and technologies. I’ve always been fascinated by airports, and it’s so rewarding to be a part of a team that designs and builds them.
3. What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?
Communication is key! It is very important to maintain good communication with your teammates, managers, and the client throughout the design process. Be clear and concise, be responsive, be respectful of everyone’s time and input, be open to feedback, and don’t be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something.
4. What do you enjoy most about working at Arora?
I enjoy that the work is challenging and rewarding. I am constantly learning new things and see great paths for career growth. I also appreciate the company culture. Everyone is friendly and helpful, and I always feel comfortable asking my teammates for advice with design issues.
5. Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
My favorite hobbies are music, hiking, fitness, and cooking! I am in band and attend concerts and festivals regularly. I love to hike and often plan my vacations around hiking trips. I am also an avid cook and work out almost every day!
