The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and Airport Consultants Council (ACC) recently hosted the 2017 Airport Planning, Design, and Construction Symposium in New Orleans, LA. Arora’s Mihir Shah, PE, AICP was tapped to present his knowledge at sessions focusing on Land Use Planning and Asset Management.

Mihir’s first presentation, Land-Use Planning – Protection, Compatibility, and Economic Development, focused on the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission’s GIS Land Use evaluation tool and was part of the conference’s Planning track. Mihir was the owner/project manager for the Land Use evaluation tool while working for the Aeronautics Commission prior to joining Arora.

The second presentation, The Airport as Minecraft: GIS and BIM in Improving the Business of Planning and Development, was part of the conference’s Terminal/Landside track. Using the popular Minecraft game as a framework for thinking about airport spatial data, Mihir discussed using GIS and other spatial data from a planner’s perspective, data and systems across other uses and the airport community, and leveraging GIS in developing an enterprise data platform.

Both sessions were widely attended and well received by their audiences. The Symposium is considered the preeminent technical event providing the latest information and developments affecting the aviation industry.
