Central East Middle School Expansion

This project consisted of a major addition to an existing middle school building in the Feltonville section of the city. The addition doubled the square footage and included a new performing arts classroom with a platform stage, a new gymnasium, science, robotic and computer labs, administrative space, and classrooms.

The existing building was a former union training center that had been turned over to the school district and had received only a minimal conversion to a classroom building. As part of the scope of work, the existing building was highly renovated to make it more suitable as a classroom building.

Mechanical design included a new boiler, chiller, unit ventilators and control system. Electrical design included new power, lighting and data wiring. Fire protection design consisted of a sprinkler system, standpipes and a fire pump. Plumbing involved toilet room renovations, as well as the addition of a full service kitchen.

In order to avoid future difficulties with basement the water infiltration that most school district buildings experience thanks to the high water table in Philadelphia, an innovative foundation drain and pumping system was placed on the inside of the foundation.
