College Park Airport, Airfield Lighting Upgrades

Arora Engineers (Arora) partnered with Urban Engineers to support airfield electrical and lighting improvements at College Park Airport (CGS), the world’s oldest continuously operating airport, located in College Park, Maryland. The project was completed under a multi-phase on-call contract for The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC).

As part of the modernization effort, Arora provided electrical engineering and construction support services focused on enhancing airfield safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. The team performed field investigations, assessed existing electrical infrastructure, and developed designs for LED runway and taxiway lighting, Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPIs), Runway End Identifier Lights (REILs), and associated underground electrical distribution systems.

Arora also supported the project through bid package development, permitting coordination, contractor submittal reviews, RFI responses, construction observations, and as-built documentation. As project requirements evolved, the team revised and repackaged design documents to address phasing adjustments, permitting agency feedback, and budget considerations while maintaining compliance with FAA and local agency requirements.

Through these improvements, the project enhanced operational safety, increased energy efficiency through LED lighting upgrades, and established a foundation for future capital improvements at this historic aviation landmark.
