Huntsville International Airport Wayfinding and Digital Signage

Arora Engineers (Arora) partnered with Gresham Smith as a subconsultant to help the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority (HMCAA) reimagine the passenger experience at Huntsville International Airport (HSV). The collaboration delivered a comprehensive Wayfinding and Signage Master Plan, a modernization effort designed to simplify navigation, enhance consistency, and bring advanced technology to every stage of the traveler journey.

Serving as subconsultant, Arora led the digital display and systems integration strategy for the initiative. The project brought together static and dynamic wayfinding to improve clarity, consistency, and user experience across all public areas of the airport.

“We examined passenger flow and potential congestion points, then offered guidance,” said Heath Kolman, Vice President of Arora’s Special Systems Practice. “We reviewed all displays in the terminal as well as curbside, the parking garage, and entrance roads. Then we made recommendations on what types of monitors should be used, and where to put them.”

Arora’s team worked closely with HSV’s IT staff to coordinate hardware and software upgrades, ensuring compatibility and cost efficiency.

“Our team worked with Gresham Smith and the airport to finalize every detail, down to font, size, and pixel pitch,” added Kolman. “The result was a digital display strategy that delivered clear, consistent, and scalable information—enhancing both passenger confidence and operational flexibility.”

SCOPE OF WORK

  • Digital Signage & Systems Integration Design – evaluation of display locations, monitor types, and placement throughout the terminal, parking garage, and roadways.
  • Coordination with HSV IT – ensured hardware/software compatibility for FIDS, BIDS, and GIDS without requiring full system replacement.
  • Development of a Preliminary Wayfinding Strategy – integrated static and digital signage for a cohesive passenger experience.
  • Design Support for TSA Exit Lane Breach Control (ELBC) System – provided special systems engineering to enhance terminal safety.
  • Construction Administration Support – conducted RFI reviews, submittal responses, and final site surveys to ensure successful implementation.

Together, these initiatives reflected HSV’s commitment to delivering a high-tech, user-centered travel experience.
